like father, like daughter.

Whenever I read about Dr Lee Wei Ling,Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s daughter, the first thing that invariably comes to my mind is: a walking human specimen of hypocrisy.

How so?

She writes often of how a careful saver and non-materialistic she is, how life should be, how people should behave, their beliefs in life, blah blah blah. I think being the daughter of Lee Kuan Yew does give you the liberty and the means to engage in high-handed morals and ethics.

let me give you some excerpts.(there are many more, do look out for her weekly “inspirational’ column on Sunday Times)

The most important trait a doctor needs is empathy. If we can feel our patient’s pain and suffering, we would certainly do our best by our patients and their welfare would override everything else.

Medicine is not just a prestigious, profitable career – it is a calling. Being a doctor will guarantee almost anyone a decent standard of living. How much money we need for a decent standard of living varies from individual to individual.

I see. that will sound fine if she practises whatever she teaches. Unfortunately, I don’t think buying a 2.8 million dollar condo in Orchard is considered as “non-materialistic”. It gets worse when people are fooled and write in to “commend” her. I remember seeing some other articles, and quite a few positive comments and admiration for selfless and “different” Lee Wei Ling online.

When I read Sunday’s article, ‘Medicine is not just a career, but a calling’,by Dr Lee Wei Ling, I felt compelled to express my respect for Dr Lee’s compassion and her dedication to her patients.

There isn’t much purpose in this blog post. Just to highlight the hypocrisy of Lee Wei Ling, so that less people will be taken in. As they say, a leopard never changes its spots. Seems like leopard’s kids also too.

Have a good read about Lee Kuan Yew here, and his worry about his un-married daughter. To be honest, I wouldn’t care less about him and his worry, and him pretending he faces the same problems as Singaporeans.

  • well she has her say and you have your say. Think u r both squared.
But imagine what thoughts are going through her mind when she wrote?

  • I can’t believe u guys r criticising her juz because she’s the daughter of LKY. She got to write a column because she’s the director of the National Neuroscience Institute. Besides, her columns r rather entertaining. I do not think she’s being hypocritical here because there r doctors who believe it’s a calling to b a doctor. Being a healthcare professional is a very altruistic thing to do. It’s really not easy especially if u work in public hospitals. No doubt she earns a lot but u can earn much more by starting businesses and all. She din claim to b a saint but juz stated her viewpoint tat being a doctor is a calling. Let’s face it, if u’re her, would u give free healthcare to ppl? Tat’s a really narrow-minded and unrealistic view.

    • hi, i am not criticising her because she is the daughter of LKY as per se.what’s there to say? as ugly as him?

i am criticising her for her sheer hypocrisy, based on her family background WHICH happens to be the daughter of LKY. ya sure calling. so since she’s so all righteous and denounce materialism and all that, why not really do it for free? because if do it for free got no money buy condo in district 10? oops. if i was as saintly as she made out to be, AND i am not lying to myself, then i will do it. ask mother Theresa.

oh one more thing, stop seeing yourself as a lesser mortal. being human is more than just having the ability to think.

hi i read your post and the first emotion that i felt coming out so strongly from it is jealousy and not only that discontentment. before i comment further. ask yourself truthfully, isn’t so true that all us human beings are in one way or another hypocritical? its quite impossible to be holier-than-thou. but what we can do is try to make a difference. how much one spends is in accordance to how much one earns and how much one spends does not determine whether he/she is contented. honestly look at our Lee-ders. do you think they really really enjoy the humongous amount of wealth? i can’t tell but making decisions that affect not 1 but 4.5 MILLION people is going to definitely make someONE grumble but these people, not only the Lees but our leaders in the government have foresight far beyond what you and I can see. and to end off, its a calling to be a leader for a nation so small yet so powerful. cheers bro.

    • hi, i read your comment. the first thought that came to my mind was: wtf are you saying?

just exactly what point are you trying to make? your comment lack a central focus. all i am saying is that: she is a hypocrite. PERIOD. are you denying she isn’t one?

so what has that point i made got to do with me, regardless of whether i am a hypocrite or not? yea make a difference. uh huh. remember, i never said she isn’t making a difference. all i am saying is : quit lying and being hypocritical.

and how on earth did u confuse lee wei ling with her father? oops. lol. i won’t even bother to reply in detail about your comments about the foresight and whatever shit. read my other posts about the myths of PAP’s Singapore. and look at Singapore’s current performance. may i point you to google IMF’s latest forecasts about Singapore’s economy, with relation to the rest of Asia? I rest my case. amazing foresight indeed! and your last comment make me feel like you are the one that’s jealous because you failed to be a top politician? only someone who hankers after that kind of job will think it’s a calling. to me, that’s just a job, albeit more influential than most.

and i don’t understand what you mean by seeing myself as a lesser mortal.didn’t you realise that was a pun and because of charles chong “lesser mortal” remark? some people are really thick(read: stupid).

  • hi~I came to this blog via singaporemind. Nice blog however I tend not to agree with your point here. 2.8million by her wealth, standard and her status is quite thrifty in nature. She could have seated herself in some GLC and relax, why then did she choose to be a caregiver? And I disagree with the notion that she became a doctor to earn big bucks, because given her connections, she could have earned it through easier ways.

    • hi =). arhs, so she’s quite thrifty, and not materialistic? you really ought to read the full and complete article. how do you know she’s not sitting in the organisation and relaxing? i didn’t say she became a doctor to earn big bucks. to be honest, i am not begrudging her from earning big bucks. what i am criticising is the sheer hypocrisy and the holier-than-thou attitude.

“Medicine is not just a prestigious, profitable career – it is a calling. Being a doctor will guarantee almost anyone a decent standard of living…”

Hmmm… Looks like she might have understood how Dr. Ooi must have felt. Doubt his professional life was anything but rosy though.

And wah, I didn’t know about the condo. She might get quite a bit of ang pao money from senior Lee still. :D

    • should be she wont understand. cos she never signed a SAF bond. can you imagine her signing? actually, i can. lol.

now you know. ang pao? don’t think so. i don’t think head of NNI earns little anyway, unless you are comparing with her brother, PM Lee?

  • This is a very shaky argument. While I doubt she’s as noble as her self-righteous (and rather condescendingly so, I might add) self makes herself out to be in all those letters to the press, there isn’t necessarily a contradiction between her beliefs and her actions (or at least the one in question). I don’t expect rich and privileged people to donate all their earnings in one fell swoop and dedicate their lives to asceticism. That is simply naive.

    • so chasing ferraris and birkins is not okay, but buying houses in the most expensive districts is okay? the logic is even more shaky. of course i didn’t expect her to to donate everything or dedicate their life to asceticism. Its just that if she’s not a saint, stop pretending or stop writing like one. i would prefer a honest article, or none at all if she has nothing substantial to write about, rather than hoodwinking and preaching to unsuspecting singaporeans about her virtues. oh and if she’s not the MM Lee’s daughter, would you care what her beliefs are? =)

      • u mean that building in nassim road? That to her is consider a shack, a shambling building of sort

although it looks pretty decent to me though not forgetting the fact that i am of a peasant stock while she is a beautiful swan.

        • beautiful. swan. thanks for redefining “beautiful” and “swan”. i didn’t know they were synonyms of “hideous” and “troll”. Lol. oh that “shack” is pretty well-defended. always got police bus parked outside. but think about it, even if outside is shabby and inside is super opulent, you wouldn’t know right?

          • ok loh, maybe if she chooses to live in a cave then that i consider that as a shack.

but imagine gurkhas guarding outside the cave. wahaha….

well lwl is a pretty gal ok so dont try and insult trolls or the word hideous, she is too beautiful to be true.

  • p/s:so u did post on TOC. ha ha…notice someone had a pic of her and she resembles the opposite of female.

i sent my friend the link and they can barely recognise her as a belle.

  • u forgot like father like daughter, both are stud and belle.

  • [...] 25 years of the demise of a free and independent press – Everyday’s Life in a Snapshot: Like father, like daughter. – The Lycan Times: Remembering Raffles – TOC: Reaching the needy? More publicity needed – TOC: The [...]

  • You know, funny that you bringing this up. At my workplace, the management or someone important took the time to print out her little essay, “After the Ferrari and Birkin bag, what next?”.. I think you can search for it on the Internet.

I was reading it and I found it to be so damn ironic and hypocritical. She keeps implying that she is so humble and she thinks that people should pay more attention to those working in the sun and she, unlike other rich people, has attained nirvana in aiming for riches. All this, coming from a Director of the NeuroScience Institute, who probably earns big bucks ?

I don’t know if I am wrong, but when her essay was placed on the company’s noticeboard and other people were looking at it .. they didn’t have any reaction at all and some were even accepting. Am I the only one who thinks her essay is dripping with hypocrisy ?

    • i read that and my first instant reaction was: serial liar. she talks as if she’s like a saint, someone who got this saintly view of the world and how the world should be, and keep trying to play down her background and play up her virtues, when its painfully obvious the only reason she’s writing that column is because of her family.

yea, earning big bucks and buying houses in orchard area. that’s NOT materialistic. only buying ferraris and birkin bags is. she also mentioned she worked in public sector cos she wanted to serve everyone, regardless of their paying ability. what she never mention is that she work in public sector because that’s the fastest way to rise up, given daddy’s name. private sector will care LESS. if shes so great, how about setting up a free clinic and working for free? her dad earns so much, surely she doesn’t need to bring home the bacon so she can fully well devote her time and energy into her selfless pursuits.

      • Its a calling .. can’t you hear it ? Ka Ching Ka Ching goes the cash machine.

Hmm what you say is true. Instead of being a big shot director, why not open a humble clinic and treat patients for free or a for very low cost ?

Saint and god .. hmm yup .. right about up there.

        • yea a calling. calling out for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. oh wells, i expect her to earn good pay anyway, given her qualifications. just that i really don’t expect her to ahem, claim that she’s thrifty and never spend on anything but go buy a expensive house in prime district. so thrifty.

yea, all saints and gods. looking down at lesser mortals.
